The Hatred Of The Horns – What Did We Do?

Vol. 3 Ed. 10

If imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, maybe mockery is the truest example of pure envy.  It’s one thing to love your school.  It’s an entirely different – and rather deranged thing I might add – to hold hatred toward others as the commanding principal of your pitiful life.  I suppose if that is what really Keeps Norman Normal I’m thankful to be more weird than average in Austin.  The Sooners habitual spite of all things Texas is a pathetic phenomenon that, I suppose, only Aggies can acknowledge.  It lends oneself to wonder why, just why, do those fans loathe us more than they love their own?

Mack’s Metamorphosis – How He Has Changed

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Vol. 3 Ed. 9

There are a slim percentage of predictabilities in this life, yet incontrovertibly, change is one of them.  Both physically and mentally, philosophically and emotionally, there is a neat law that dictates as age increases, so too does one’s cosmetic and cerebral maturation.   Once upon a time there was a healthily brown-haired man who charmed and delighted.   Both energetic and enthusiastic, loyal and loving, he was hailed as the savior to a sport that had seen its once prolific days spiral into puzzling mediocrity.  Of course, all that has changed now.  And it’s undoubtedly because Mack Brown has changed too.

Open Practice Notes & Observations *Defense*

Vol. 3 Ed. 8

If the legendary axiom really is accurate –    if defense does win you championships – odds are Las Vegas better begin taking Texas very seriously.  A dapperly-dressed Deion Sanders once vociferously told recording television cameras that in order to touch a trophy, “You must score points.”  Well, the former cornerback is correct.  Yet, the truthful history of our Horns tells us that even though offensive proliferation is stimulating, it isn’t overly paramount.  A diabolical defense is essential to claiming titles, case in point the ability to stop foes on say, 4th and 2.  And this seasons swarming Longhorn unit could be their best in quite some time.

Vol. 3 Ed. 7

From the normal nook where Bevo usually breathes, a simple sign read – 24 More Days Until Rice.”  Legible from almost every level inside of DKR Memorial Stadium, this placard beaconed outward as a pleasing reminder to the 3,000 or so enthusiasts inside this edifice on Wednesday evening that Texas football clashes are, indeed, imminently approaching.  The masses made their way to this cathedral of college football – in spite of insanely humid conditions – to view the first of the Longhorns two open practices this August.  And what they witnessed should make them even more excited for the next twenty-four days to disappear.

Recruiting Round-Up: Who Will Commit Next?

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Vol. 3 Ed. 6

It’s kind of like concocting the perfect pizza.  You’ve picked most of the tasty toppings and now all that separates you from a mouthwatering masterpiece is figuring out those final irresistible ingredients.  Twenty-two outstanding oral pledges to the 2011 recruiting haul have the Longhorns’ pie presently looking oh-so luscious. Yet, there are still some essential elements that must be added to this design to make it truly delectable before it is served on Signing Day.  Today, the BOE examines the commitment percentages of three unpledged prospects that Texas would desperately like to grab before they grub on next February’s feast.

Harris No More A Horn, Says So Long To Football

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Vol. 3 Ed. 5

Last Friday’s story may have been startling to some, but to me it generated no grand shock.  Senior quarterback Sherrod Harris’ academically weighted announcement to leave the Longhorn football team was a choice I had anticipated was a long-time coming, and one I was actually amazed had not come a couple seasons sooner.  The former back-up is a fellow I have had the pleasure of calling an acquaintance for a few years.  Humble, polite, and outgoing, Sherrod was and still is a student above all other things.

Which Freshmen Will See The Field This Fall?

Vol. 3 Ed. 4

A solid six months have been clawed off the calendar since Head Coach Mack Brown and his staff signed what many believe could eventually end up being the finest recruiting ensemble ever assembled during their time at Texas.  Then, twenty-five of this state and nation’s best blue-chippers pledged their impending loyalty to the Longhorns.  And oh how their lives have changedFebruary, for most, was a time of senior shenanigans – homeroom horseplay and late-night levity.  However, now, these new tots reside rock-bottom on the totem-pole.  As rookies they aren’t regarded as rooks on the chessboard as much as powerless pawns.
